Police in West Lothian are appealing for further information following the theft of two historic bibles from a church near Queensferry.

The bibles were initially stolen between midday on Sunday, July 17, and 2pm on Saturday, July 23, from Abercorn Church in the village of Abercorn.

The bibles are thought to be up to 200 years old and had been lent to the church by the Hopetoun Family.

The religious texts have since been returned to their owners, however person(s) responsible for the theft is still to be traced.

With this development in mind, officers are again appealing to the public for information.

The bibles were returned to Hopetoun House, which is near to the village of Abercorn, on Saturday, August 20, between 10.30am and 12.05pm.

Detective Constable Debbie Totter of Livingston CID said:  “While it is a positive development that the bibles have been returned intact, it is important to remember that this was a high-value theft and we are continuing to treat it in this manner.

“We are appealing for anyone who was in the vicinity of Hopetoun House on Saturday, August 20, and who may have seen the bibles returned, to contact police immediately.”
