One of the UK’s oldest ceremonies is set to make a welcome return to Musselburgh this weekend.

Held in the ‘Honest Toun’ every 21 years The Riding of the Marches will feature a series of local events between Saturday, July 23rd, and Sunday, July 31st.

Its origins are believed to date back to the fifth century to mark the rich history and traditions of the town.

The ceremonial aspect of the event includes a series of community based activities including a huge procession through Musselburgh, a pageant, civic ball, a concert with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, as well as a host of other entertainment suitable for young and old. The festivities will conclude with a spectacular Lumiere at the mouth of the River Esk and a huge fireworks display.

Area Commander for East Lothian, Chief Inspector Matt Paden, said: “For the first time this century, the Riding of the Marches is set to return to the Musselburgh area.

“A series of events are scheduled over the course of the week and we want everyone who lives and visits the town to enjoy what is on offer.

“I can reassure the public that local officers are working closely with event organisers to ensure we have appropriate resources in place to keep the public safe.

“There will be, at certain times, an increased police presence in the town during the celebrations to assist with the public and to offer assistance as and when it is required.

“We will also be posting traffic disruption and updates on our various social media channels so please follow them in order to get the most up to date information.

“Musselburgh is a safe and welcoming town and we want to maintain this by ensuring visitors enjoy the celebrations and have the best possible experience.”
