Police in Edinburgh are appealing for information in order to trace a 79-year-old man who is missing from the South Bridge area.

Hugh Gallagher, also known as Hughie, was last seen around 4pm on Sunday, December 4, in the Royal Oak public house in Infirmary Street.

Hugh left the pub to walk to his home in Gullan’s Close, just off St Mary’s Street, however he failed to return.

He was discovered to be missing around 11.20am on Monday, December 5, and police were subsequently notified.  He also failed to attend the Salvation Army in Niddry Street for breakfast, which is his usual habit.

Hugh is described as a white man with a slim build.  He is around 5ft 7” – 5ft 8” in height with short grey/ white hair.  He walks slowly and may appear frail.

He was last seen wearing a black jacket, light coloured chords and brown shoes.

Hugh has recently being released from hospital and suffers from a variety of medical conditions. He may also appear disorientated.

Inspector Bob Innes of Howdenhall Police Station said:  “Hugh has not been seen since 4pm on Sunday, December 4, and we are growing increasingly concerned for his welfare.

“Hugh is a creature of habit and this variation of his routine is considered to be out of character.

“I would urge anyone who has seen Hugh, or recognises his description, to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”
