Police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses after three men were assaulted in the Colinton area of the city.
At around 6:30pm on Tuesday, July 26th, an 85-year-old man was walking westwards along Redford Road near Colinton Bowling Club when he became aware of two males and a female approaching him from the opposite direction riding bicycles on the pavement.
As they neared the man told the trio that they should not be riding on the footpath, as he could not pass.
The three suspects reacted angrily and began shouting at the man.
At this point a 68-year-old male who was standing at a bus stop on the opposite side of the road crossed over and intervened in order to assist the gentleman.
The unknown female began shouting at this man before punching him in the face in an unprovoked attack.
He fell to the ground where he was further kicked and punched by one of the male suspects.
Meanwhile, one of the attackers pushed the elderly man to the ground prompting a 65-year-old man who was walking nearby to run over and assist however he was also pushed to the ground.
Moments later the three suspects made off on their bicycles heading south along Redford Road before being lost from view.
None of the men were seriously injured however one was taken to hospital for assessment and has since been discharged.
Anyone who can help identify the suspects is asked to come forward.
There is no description available for one of the males however the other is said to be white, in his 20’s, slim build with a goatee beard. He was wearing a light coloured top and blue jeans.
The female is also white, in her 20’s, has light coloured wavy hair and wearing a light coloured top and blue patterned trousers.
Chief Inspector Helen Harrison of Wester Hailes police station said: “This was a despicable attack carried out for absolutely no reason whatsoever and I can reassure the victims as well as the wider public that we will do everything in our power to trace and arrest these individuals.
“Such behavior is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
“An extensive investigation is now underway including door-to-door enquiries and there will be an increased police presence in the area for the foreseeable future.
“Today, I am eager to hear from anyone who recognises the descriptions of the attackers or who was in the area of Redford Road on Tuesday evening and who saw these suspects.”
