A man has died after entering the water at Leith harbour in last night.
Emergency services were called to Leith after the man was spotted in the water.
Frantic efforts were made to save him but paramedics were unsuccessful following the alert at 9pm.
A coastguard spokesman said: “A man had entered the water. He was recovered by the lifeboat and handed to the ambulance service.
“The Kinghorn RNLI lifeboat and coastguard teams from South Queensferry and Fisherrow were called.”
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Police in Edinburgh responded to Ocean Terminal at around 10pm on Wednesday 12th July after an elderly man was seen to enter the water near to the Royal Yacht Britannia.
“The male was removed from the water and taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where he sadly passed away.
“Inquiries into the full circumstances surrounding this incident are ongoing.”
